E-scooter trauma activations increased from 4 cases in 2020 to 28 cases in 2024. E-bike trauma activations increased from 15 cases to 51 cases during the same period.

Trauma activations represent injuries requiring coordinated trauma team response and are distinct from general emergency department visits.

Pediatric Injury Data

The Hospital for Sick Children Trauma Registry reports that between 2021 and 2024, e-scooters accounted for 85% of serious injuries involving battery-powered personal mobility devices treated at the institution.

Helmet Use And Injury Characteristics

A peer-reviewed Canadian study examining emergency department presentations in Edmonton found that 2% of injured e-scooter riders were wearing helmets at the time of injury.

The study identified head, face, and upper extremity injuries among commonly reported injury locations but did not assess fault, legal responsibility, or long-term outcomes.

Time Of Injury Presentation

According to Ottawa Public Health, emergency department visits related to e-scooter injuries occurred most frequently in the late afternoon and evening, based on ED registration times. The agency notes that registration time may not precisely reflect the moment of injury.
